John M. Gaver, III is a third-generation horseman and trainer, and a former professional handicapper for Daily Racing Form and Churchill Downs, Inc. Check out this installment touting longshot Funny Cide in the 2003 Official Kentucky Derby Program.

To say that Thoroughbred racing is in his blood would be an understatement, as he is the son and grandson of trainers and his maternal great-grandfather was one of the founder’s of Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky.

His father, John M. Gaver, Jr., trained back-to-back champions for the famed Greentree Stable of John Hay Whitney and Joan Whitney Payson, while his grandfather, John M. Gaver, is a member of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, New York and is best known as the conditioner of the 1953 Horse of the Year Tom Fool.
